I know acupuncture helps a lot with our energy and how we heal — what does an acupuncture appointment look like for a first timer?
Dr. Robin’s Answer
When you go to an acupuncture appointment for the first time, the acupuncturist will take some time to get to know you and your health concerns. They will ask you to fill out some paperwork that may include a detailed medical history, but they will usually also spend some time talking to you about what brought you in, what symptoms you are experiencing, and what you hope to get out of acupuncture. Many acupuncturists will also evaluate your current state by assessing your pulse and your tongue. To assess your pulse, they simply hold your wrist for a few minutes. To assess your tongue, they’ll ask you to stick it out.
Once the acupuncturist understands your current state of energy and health, they will ask you to remove your socks and shoes and lay down on the table. They will then insert very thin needles into your skin at different points. Many of the points that they use are in your hands and feet, but they may also put them in points in your legs (pulling your pant legs up a little bit), arms, stomach, or face.
The needle part of acupuncture is often the main source of concern for people. But most people find that because the needles are so thin, they don’t feel it go in, or they feel it so briefly that it doesn’t cause pain or distress.
Once all the needles are in place, the acupuncturist will ask if you are comfortable, they will dim the lights, and they will leave you to rest for 30 to 60 minutes. During this time, you can meditate or you can take a nap, but you do need to lay still.
After the time is up, the acupuncturist will return, remove the needles, and you can go on with the rest of your day. Depending on your health goals, you will make a plan with the acupuncturist for how often you should return.
What’s one thing I can do to boost my energy in five minutes?
Dr. Robin’s Answer
My favorite quick-hit energy booster is smell. I love Zum Mist room spray and essential oils. Find one essential oil that you like and when you need that quick energy boost, you can open the bottle and smell it, dab it onto your skin, or diffuse it into the room with a diffuser. Because you asked about an energy boost, I will recommend starting with citrus smells. Lemon, orange, lime, grapefruit, and lemongrass are all available as essential oils and are known to brighten your mood and lift your energy.
Another way to boost your energy is to rub your ears. There are many acupuncture points on your ear, so simply starting at the top of your ear and rubbing down to the lobe will boost your energy.
I want to know about ways to balance the Energy in your home and what kind of professionals you could employ vs. “do it yourself” type of things… please and thank you! Also, is this where feng shui comes into play?
Dr. Robin’s Answer
There are many simple things that you can do yourself to balance the energy in your home.
- Open the windows and air out your home. Picture negative energy leaving.
- Clean your home. Give it a really thorough scrubbing.
- Clear the clutter. Don’t just move it from the kitchen table to a shelf or closet, really get it out.
- Make repairs. Whether it is to the structure of the home or to broken objects in the home, they have built up negative energy. So make repairs if possible or remove broken items.
- Light a candle. Use one that is not made with toxic substances.
- Bring in plants and flowers. There are many leafy green vines that are easy to keep alive.
There are many other things that you can do to change the energy in your home that are slightly more “woo” or that might work best if you have professional help. This is definitely where feng shui comes in, and learning more or hiring a consultant can help you understand where to place your furniture to balance the energy.
You can also change the energy by:
- Smudging with sage. A professional can help you with this.
- Using Himalayan salt lamps.
- Using essential oil diffusers.
- Burning incense.
- Placing crystals in the rooms. A professional can help you choose the right crystals for you.
If you have felt a recent build up of negative energy in your home, think about how you have been using the space recently. Have you gotten in arguments with your family? Has everyone been stressed and tensions are running high? Have you been watching violent TV shows? All of these things will impact your energy and the energy in your home, so take some time to assess what is contributing to the energy.
Why should I worry about energy when I am worried about a more pressing health issue?
Dr. Robin’s Answer
In a book called Power vs. Force, David R. Hawkins calculates the vibrational energy of different people. Energy has a vibration, which we talked about with food. Higher vibration food is healthier and more alive. Lower energy food will deplete us. This difference in vibration is true for people as well. We can have higher vibrations which is better, more positive energy, or we can have low vibrations.
In Hawkins’ calculations, he says that Jesus and Mother Theresa, who are people known for their positive impact on people and the world vibrate above 800. Those positive high vibrations make the world heal, and healing is a characteristic of people who vibrate that high. People who have low vibrations are sick and make the world sicker.
The reason that you want to think about energy is because improving your energy and boosting your vibration will help you heal from your more pressing health issue. Boosting your energy can take a couple of small changes, but just those changes will increase your vibration and help you improve your overall health.
