Dr. Carl Cleveland III comes from a long line of chiropractors. His great-grandmother, both grandparents, and both parents were chiropractors. He jokes that when he was a kid, he thought everyone grew up to be a chiropractor. So he did. And now two of his children are also chiropractors. Dr. Cleveland’s grandparents, Dr. C.S. Cleveland Sr. and Dr. Ruth R. Cleveland, founded Cleveland Chiropractic College in 1922. The college is now known as Cleveland University — Kansas City and Dr. Cleveland is the president and well known for his perspectives on chiropractic care.
The perspective of Doctors of Chiropractic has changed a lot in the years since the founding of Cleveland University. When Dr. Cleveland Sr. and Dr. Ruth founded the college, it was a time when people could be arrested for practicing chiropractic care, and they were never sure who was coming to their door. Dr. Cleveland tells us now that no one in his family was actually arrested for practicing, but it was a real possibility.
In the 95 years since the founding of the college, Doctors of Chiropractic have gained cultural authority and now they are considered the primary care professionals for spinal health and well-being. Doctors of Chiropractic focus on proper spinal function, the spinal relationship to the nervous system, and on good health.
Dr. Cleveland views it as his work to share the science, philosophy, and art of the chiropractic profession with everyone, so that they can understand and know the value of chiropractic care.
In his view, chiropractic care is most valuable when it is used to prevent illness or disease. With regular visits to a Doctor of Chiropractic, people can maintain proper spinal function and mobility of those joints. That allows the central nervous system that runs through the spinal column to operate well and keep people healthy.
How Could You Benefit from Chiropractic Care?
Because the spine houses the nervous system, chiropractic care is used to help many body systems operate at their best.
Patients seek chiropractic care most often if they are experiencing back pain, scoliosis, or neck pain. If you experience those symptoms, you could certainly benefit. But chiropractic can also help with headaches and migraines, ear infections, arthritis and joint pain, asthma, and high blood pressure. Chiropractic care can also help women have a healthy pregnancy, and it can help improve organ function.
Of course the biggest benefit is when you see results from chiropractic care. Research shows that chiropractic care is effective for healing pain and helping people get back to their lives faster. A 2003 study in the British Medical Journal split patients with neck pain into three groups. The first received chiropractic care, the second physiotherapy, and the third general care with drugs and education. The patients in the chiropractic group recovered faster than all the other groups.
In addition to the benefit of results, chiropractic care is cost-effective. The same 2003 study showed that the chiropractic patients healed faster, and they also paid less for their treatment than the other two groups.
Other benefits of chiropractic care are that it is drug-free and non-invasive. It gives many patients an option other than surgery for healing their body. And now, the Journal of the American Medical Association recommends that people with back pain try chiropractic before they move to the step of having surgery.
Dr. Cleveland tells us that chiropractic care can enhance people’s mobility, which leads to a better quality of life and more well-being. Enhancing mobility is allowing the baby boomer generation to be 85 years old and signing up for a single’s cruise instead of sitting in a recliner all day.
Most people seek out chiropractic care because they have back pain. But even if you don’t have back or neck pain, chiropractic care can benefit you. Misalignments or limited mobility in the spine can be caused by accidents or trauma, but they can also be caused by our lifestyle. Most of us are spending all day sitting, not getting much movement, and we’re doing it with poor posture. That can also lead to damage. Chiropractic care can help prevent that damage. A chiropractic adjustment can realign the small misalignments and help the body heal itself without the damage becoming a painful problem first.
Doctors of Chiropractic also promote healthy lifestyles. They can guide you to making better choices so that you are not causing damage to your spine and central nervous system. And their guidance can be a small change that leads to a big shift in your well-being.
